Personal DSL Frequently Asked Questions

What is DSL?

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. This new technology provides high-speed access to data over a single pair of ordinary copper telephone wires using a previously unused portion of the frequency spectrum of POTS (plain old telephone service).

Will I need an additional phone line?

No. Personal DSL uses the line that already extends into your home. As we mentioned above, DSL technology uses a different frequency spectrum to transfer data than is used for telephone service; data travels over the 100kHz - 2.2Mhz frequency spectrum and POTS uses 0 - 4 kHz. This allows simultaneous analog voice or fax and DSL data transmission over the same line.

Why choose Personal DSL?

Here are the advantages at a glance:
  • Up to 125 times faster than a 56k connection
  • Allows you to talk on the phone while surfing the web
  • Secure - no shared access with cable modems
  • Reliable - works over existing phone lines
  • Dedicated line - no busy signals ever!
  • 24 hr/7days Internet access

To compare DSL with several other popular types of Internet services, take a look at this chart.

How does DSL compare to cable modems?

Both Personal DSL and cable modems offer dedicated (always-on) service, but DSL does so over your own personal line while cable modems work over a shared media. So, while cable modems have greater downstream bandwidth capabilities (up to 30 Mbps) than ADSL, a cable modem's bandwidth may vary - perhaps dramatically - according to how many users in a neighborhood get online with them at one time. Upstream cable modem traffic, too, may be slower than with Personal DSL, either because the particular modem is inherently slower, or because of rate reductions due to contention for bandwidth slots. With DSL, you are guaranteed to get all of the bandwidth that you pay for.

Cable modems also pose a risk to the security and privacy of the data they transmit - again, due to shared lines. Because your Personal DSL line is your own, it's more secure.
